What to Bring

This is a list of things that I’ve found particularly useful on this trip.

Bradt Guide to Ghana – I have the third edition which is starting to show its age. It was published in 2003 and most of the prices are way off and some of the places it recommends are closed or have really deteriorated. There is a new edition out that I haven’t had a chance to review yet.

MSR Packtowel – A small, quick drying towel is incredibly useful for trips. It takes up very little space in a bag but can be a real life-saver for quick swims in waterfalls or for hotels that don’t provide towels.

Laptop – I didn’t bring mine, but I wish I had one nearly every day. I would only recommend this if you are going to be staying at the University of Ghana though, as traveling with one would be too heavy and dangerous. A few people have been robbed at gun or knife point for their laptops when they took them off campus.

Large book bag with chest strap – I bought mine in 2002 and it has been faithfully serving me for the past five years. The chest strap makes carrying heavy loads in it much easier.

What about rechargable AA batteries and an LED light? Did you EVER use that? Can you trade it for an umbrella stand? Or can it be a peace gift from the American People? Peace gifting has to start somewhere.

Our lights go out very rarely, so i haven’t used the lantern much. The headlamp is useful at some of the more rustic places I’ve stayed when I have to go to the bathroom late at night. I think I’ll leave it with some of my friends when I go.
